Medicine Cabinet Installation:
PREPARATION:
Using a stud finder, locate two studs far enough apart that a cabinet will fit into. Find a space on the wall that you want to install the cabinet that is at least the width of your cabinet.
TOOLS & MATERIALS:
Stud Finder
Keyhole Saw
Tape Measure
Hammer
Drill
Level
Nails & Wood Screws
STEP 1:
After you have located the studs, punch a small hole in the wall with a keyhole saw to take a look at what is behind it. You are looking for wires that might be in the way. If there are no obstructions, cut the hole big enough to insert your hand to feel around.
STEP 2:
Cut the drywall over to one of the studs and find the edge.
STEP 3:
With a piece of cardboard, make a template of the medicine cabinet. You are going to use this as a guide to cut the whole in the drywall.
STEP 4:
Place the template on the wall and mark where you are going to cut. Check it with a level before you draw the lines.
STEP 5:
Cut out the marked area with the keyhole saw.
STEP 6:
Place the cabinet into the opening and check if it's level. Make any adjustments now if you need to.
STEP 7:
The cabinet should be marked where the screws are to go. Using a drill, insert the screws in at an angle into the stud. (You want to make sure that you miss the wallboard with the screw and hit the stud, which will support a lot more weight.)
STEP 8:
Set the level on it one more time.
STEP 9:
After the screws are in, add the shelves.
Now you can save some serious counter space!
Shelf Bracket Installation:
TOOLS & MATERIALS:
Level
Shelf Brackets & Standards
Screws
STEP 1:
Mount one standard on the wall (use a level to make sure it's plumb).
STEP 2:
When driving your screws in, drive them at least an inch and a half into the wall stud.
STEP 3:
Install a shelf bracket into your first standard.
STEP 4:
Take a second standard and install a shelf bracket into it (make sure it's in the same corresponding slot as the first bracket already on the wall.)
STEP 5:
Move your standard over, making sure that it's in place.
STEP 6:
Place a level across the top of both of the brackets.
STEP 7:
Move this standard up and down until it reads level.
STEP 8:
Now drive in the screws for the second standard.
STEP 9:
Once both standards are level, install the shelf brackets.
Now you are the proud owner of shelves!
Remote Lighting Installation:
PREPARATION:
Before beginning any electrical project, be sure to turn off the power off at the breaker box.
TOOLS & MATERIALS:
Flathead Screwdriver
Phillips Head Screwdriver
Remote Lighting Kit
STEP 1:
Once the power is off at the breaker box, remove the screws holding the existing face plate to your switches.
STEP 2:
Once the faceplate is off, use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the switch you are going to replace. Once you have pulled the old switch out of the wall socket, pay close attention to where the wires are connected.
STEP 3:
You will be reconnecting the wires to the same positions on the new switch. Every new switch comes with detailed wiring instructions. Be sure to follow them closely.
STEP 4:
Locate the grounding wire inside the socket in the wall.
STEP 5:
Twist the ground wire from the new switch together with the others and secure them with the electrical screw.
STEP 6:
Connect the hot and neutral wires on the new switch to the hot and neutral wires in the wall.
STEP 7:
Twist them together and fasten them in with electrical screws.
STEP 8:
Once you have attached the wires and tightened the electrical screws, tuck all the wiring back into the wall.
STEP 9:
Screw the new remote switch onto the wall mount.
STEP 10:
Put the old face plate back on.
Now you never have to get up to turn the lights on or off!
